Welcome to Fillimet

Where the Magic Happens

Andur surveyed the fields ahead of him, relaxing his defenses slightly until he could feel the magic rippling through the landscape. He had viewed this same scene many times while under the tutelage of his Great Uncle Regis, but today it felt different, more alive, more exciting.   He had spent his childhood studying magic, casting illusions in failed efforts to avoid cleaning his bedroom before graduating to an apprenticeship assisting in various experiments for his Great Uncle. But now, after years of study, he had finally been declared ready to seek his own fortunes. Today, all of Fillimet and its magical secrets were his to discover and explore.   Today was the day he would truly begin to discover himself.

What is Fillimet?

Fillimet is a bright fantasy, upbeat world full of hope and wonder. It has been known to find its own dark or somber undertones from time to time but even in these stories there is a hint of something better, and belief in the possibility of overcoming the darkness.   The world itself is vast, with layers of known and unknown histories and the motivations of its former and current inhabitants coloring the cultures of each region and plane. Curiosity drives scientists to investigate in the hopes of uncovering secrets from the past and revelations from the future, with the intent to apply those discoveries to further improve life in the present day.

Magic of Fillimet

Magic has become the foundation of Fillimet, its influence permeating into every facet of life from the most grandiose of achievements to the smallest technological conveniences of everyday life. The people of Fillimet and its affiliated planes of existence have learned to adopt and adapt these magical skills to meet their needs and achieve their desires, such that magic and technology are inseperably intertwined.   Most individuals have ready access to magic, although only the Naturally Attuned can tap into their Imperium to cast magic without a Focus. Most of the creatures of Fillimet have also adapted to the ready supply of magic, with some even consuming its power as their main source of sustenance.

People of Fillimet

While Fillimet is home to a large variety of species each individual remains their own self with their own personal motivations and desires, their own obligations and burdens, irrespective of their own species or the species of those around them. Metalsmiths craft nails and horseshoes, families travel on holidays aboard Airships or through the Portal Exchange, while the Society of Scientific Exploration and Discovery uses every method at their disposal to answer the burning scientific questions of the day.   People rally around those with similar ideals, aspirations, and cultures to their own, rather than simply who outwardly appears the most like themselves. Life in the cities and wilds of Fillimet remains a kaleidoscope of diversity, maintaining the everyday rhythms of life.

Themes of Fillimet

I intend to write Fillimet as an exploration into individual and societal behavior. How would people act and react if I take the same inclinations of today but on the framework of a bright, high fantasy world?

Hope and Joy

Joy in the everyday remains a central theme, and sharing those joys with others. Hope is woven throughout, as well, as it is that hope that good will triumph and everything will work out in the end that allows people to find their joy in the here and now. Fillimet remains a land where ordinary people can follow extraordinary dreams, with a genuine hope of success.

Personal and Organizational Motovations

I will be exploring the motivations of individuals, and how these core motivations and beliefs can change and be changed by a person and their experiences over time. Hubris, redemption, corruption, curiosity, and the relentless pursuit of... something are just a sampling of the motivations that will come into play. In this way I intent to write Fillimet as a land of adventure and revelation, full of tales of unlikely friendships, perseverance in the face of adversity, and journeys of self-discovery, where all participants on all sides of the story possess believable interests and motivations.

Magic as Technology

Finally, due to my background in engineering I have a deep interest in how and why things work the way they work, and my writings for Fillimet are no different. I intend to focus some efforts into the exploration of the impacts of magic on everyday life, and the impact that has on technological development as well as the people who rely upon the presence of magic for their daily lives.

Who Knows?

These are of course only the main themes I intend to explore over time. Different regions will also have their own themes and concerns, where I will examine the impacts of those themes in the region as well as upon the region's interaction with the rest of the world.

Personal Background

Fillimet represents my return to writing after a long hiatus. I had allowed the stresses and concerns of life to turn me away from the things I truly enjoyed, and so in many ways the journeys of discovery I pursue in writing Fillimet mirror my own self-discovery. This world of fantasy and optimism is built upon my own heart as I work to truly discover myself for the first time and to overcome the discouragement I have faced in life that prevented me from pursuing my own passions and following my own soul.   After more than a decade without writing due I have finally broken free, picked up my pen, and set forth to find my own voice and my own place in the real world. And from this resolve, the world of Fillimet was born.

I think it might help to have some of the text broken up a bit more by headers or images. The text itself seems fine. :)

Really? Is the text interesting and clear?   Was trying to finish that before doing images, so... Yay! Will have to find pictures now (as Summer Camp allows).   Thank you! <3

I'll read through your other articles and think about this some more, but my initial view is that this article gives a clear picture of the type of world we can expect to see develop and the 'high concepts' that you have put in place. I can also see some of the core components (e.g. magic, science) and how they are bound - maybe a mention of a few other key organizations with pop-ups to add more context would be useful too. The additions of the popups on certain items gave some nice details that add good visual imagery to my mind. So, overall I think this actually works very well and is a great basis for you to review/adjust as you write more. As a side note, I found it quite uplifting to read it combined with your bio article. I hope this is of some use, and I'll come back with more thoughts. I can see I'm going to enjoy reading your world :)

I like the "motovations. " Is this what they mean when they say "write your meta as article"?

Jul 22, 2020 12:31 by Morgan Biscup

This one is more of a world introduction, with a focus on the reader and providing them the foundation of your world.   The Meta, on the other hand, is a focus for you as the author, to keep your world consistent. This one is my meta at the moment:     They will include some of the same information, but Introduction articles are more of a "Where should you start?" answer to the reader, while Meta articles are a "Where am I going with this?" answer for the author(s).   I hope this helps! :)

Thank you! That's exactly the feel I had been hoping for, and the songwriter I hired matched it perfectly. I have been listening to it almost non-stop since I received the final version. (Part of that due to my 3 year old running off with my phone so she could dance to it, haha.)

I love the music. It was great addition to the page. It invokes a feeling of majestic wonder and a world that is large but is also filled with small details and places to explore. I look forward to peeking in on Fillimet.
