A carpenter typically learns their trade through an apprenticeship. The length of this apprenticeship depends upon the skills and aptitudes of the student as well as the type and quality required for their chosen field.
Carpenters are taught how to select and prepare woods based upon the traits and appearances desired in the finished piece. They learn about the different properties of different woods, and how to clean, sand, shape, and preserve them.

Carpenters obtain payment through the sale of their wares. The value of each item is directly proportional to the type of the item and the quality of its manufacture.

Carpenters work with all things wood related, from trinkets to furniture to buildings. They tend to specialize in one branch of carpentry, as each requires different skills for successful mastery due to the differences in scale and purpose. Luthiers, for example, specialize in the creation of stringed instruments, requiring a mastery of music in addition to skills bending, shaping, and assembling fine pieces of thin woods.
Social Status
A skilled craftsman is well respected for their craft and their important contributions to their town's status or ability to self-equip their defenses. The town's opinions of their carpenters do vary based upon the town's priorities. As a whole wealthier cities tend to place a higher value on artesan carpenters, while working towns place more importance on the more practical carpentry skills.

Carpenters' tools are as varied as their purpose. Saws of various types and sizes are useful for resizing woods with rough or precise cuts depending upon the tool. Sanding tools are used to smooth the wood, while chisels and scratch awls help reshape the wood on a smaller scale. Shaping tools and steam boxes (often powered by Hydromancy) help reshape woods into more desired and useful shapes. Mallets, drills, and a large assortment of measuring instruments also remain especially common tools depending upon the task at hand.

Carpenters require wood to perform their craft, in various sizes and varieties depending upon their specialization and intended final result. Depending upon their specialty they may also require glue, nails or other fasteners, hardware such as knobs and handles, or even instrument strings.
Workplace
Carpenters involved in crafting movable items such as furniture, dishes, smaller artwork, or instruments will keep a studio set with their tools and equipment. Sometimes this studio is part of their own home, or it may be a separate structure elsewhere in town. Carpenters who work on larger projects such as constructing buildings or bridges will work in the field, exposed to the elements just like their current project.
